Fishing Keys

TO: The Householder

There has been an increase in the incidents of ‘fishing’ of car keys in recent weeks. We, as your local Community Gardai, have outlined below some precautions you can take to ensure you do not become a victim of this crime or other crimes in relation to your vehicle.

Do not leave the keys to your vehicle (or home) in open view on kitchen or hall tables, window sills, counter tops or on wall hooks etc particularly within reach of the front door. It is not uncommon for thieves to remove these keys using a ‘fishing rod’ or similar item through the letter box or open window.

At bed time, take the keys with you if you have no other secure location but remember, if challenged, that your personal safety and that of your family, is more important than your vehicle

Do not attach a tag to your keys with your address, should they be lost outside the home this will provide the culprit with information.

Ensure you vehicle is locked (doors and windows) at all times even when parked in your own drive.

Do not leave valuables or personal documents on view in your vehicle.

The weather is now turning colder, if you leave your car running in your drive in the morning, to defrost windows, this may offer a culprit the chance to steal your vehicle. Also remember this may compromise your insurance cover.
